| These cards can make Southwest Airlines travel a lot cheaper | by Cameron Sperance, Senior Hotels Reporter | | | Southwest Airlines is the go-to airline for many travelers in the U.S. for a long list of reasons. And two reasons, at least among those in the know, are the easy-to-use Southwest Rapid Rewards points and the extra-valuable Southwest Airlines Companion Pass.
Right now, both of those things are within easier reach than normal with the just-increased bonuses on three Southwest credit cards: TPG values those 75,000 Rapid Rewards points at more than $1,000 in Southwest Airlines travel, so these are great offers just for the bonus points.
But if you want to earn a Companion Pass so you can bring a designated companion along for free on all of your Southwest Airlines flights (save for taxes and fees) for the year you earn it plus all the next year, this is good news, as the card bonus points count toward the 135,000 qualifying points you need to earn in a calendar year to unlock the pass.
If you finish meeting the spending requirements and trigger the bonus points very early in a calendar year, then you've got a running head start to maximize almost two years with this invaluable BOGO travel tool.
Keep in mind, there are also small-business credit cards to help get you to that magic Companion Pass-eligible point threshold: The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card comes with 60,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 in the first three months of the account opening, while the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card comes with 80,000 Rapid Rewards points after you spend $5,000 in the first three months of the account opening.
I'm already thinking of how to use those bonuses to make a Hawaiian getaway cheaper than a weekend at home visiting my mom. Don't tell her I said that!
