| Chasing the northern lights | by Cameron Sperance, Senior Hotels Reporter | | | A new year is nearly upon us, and it is expected to be particularly good for northern lights viewing thanks to intense solar activity, per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Just a quick refresh: The aurora borealis — better known as the northern lights — forms when electrically charged solar particles collide with the earth's atmosphere.
So, where are the best places to book a getaway for your celestial viewing?
You can see the lights from select parts of the continental U.S., Iceland, Alaska, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Canada and Scotland, to name a few — and even a cruise.
For hotels, there are plenty of boutique options, but you can find points hotels in Alaska or redeem your Hilton Honors points at TPG favorite Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre to make things a little more affordable.
