| | Travel must-haves: Cash and cards | | by Tarah Chieffi, Travel News Reporter | |  | Cash may no longer be king, but I would argue it still deserves a spot in the royal court. This is a lesson I've learned the hard way, as I no longer regularly carry cash in my wallet. This has thrown me into a few sticky situations this year, especially during my travels.
If you are staying at a hotel and need to leave a tip for the housekeeper or you need to pay the bill at a bar or restaurant that only accepts cash (yes, they are still out there), you'll need some dollars in your wallet.
During this busy holiday travel season, make sure "withdraw cash" is on your packing checklist. Do it before you leave or at a local bank once you reach your destination — not at the airport, where you'll likely pay higher ATM surcharges or exchange rates on foreign currency.
After you've secured your cash, you'll also want to make sure you have the best credit cards for travel in your wallet as well. If you are traveling internationally, you'll want one of these credit cards with no foreign transaction fees, or if you have a long layover, you'll want one of these best cards for airport lounge access.
