| Do these things to start the year off right | by Becky Blaine, Newsletter Editor | | | It's a new year, and that means a reset on many points and miles accounts, travel credits and loyalty programs. Our team of experts has compiled a checklist to help you get the year off to a great start and make the most of your miles, points and credits.
Here are just a few reminders to get you started:
If you have an American Express card with an annual fee credit, make sure you log in to your account to designate the airline for the year by Jan. 31 if you want to make a change. If you do nothing, it will remain the same as the previous year.
Delta Air Lines and Marriott higher-tier elite members both have Choice Benefits to designate in the new year. Marriott's deadline is Sunday and Delta's is Jan. 31.
If you're in the market for free flights, then Southwest Airlines might be a good choice for you, depending on your home airport and desired destinations. You can earn the coveted Companion Pass this year and enjoy BOGO flights for the rest of 2024 and 2025. The sign-up bonuses from Southwest credit cards count toward the 135,000 qualifying points needed to earn a Companion Pass, and cardholders receive an annual 10,000-point boost, so signing up for a new Southwest credit card can help give you a head start.
