| Earn points while you shop | by Tarah Chieffi, Travel News Reporter | | | Whether I'm shopping for jeans or hotel stays, I'm always on the hunt for a good deal. I've been using online shopping portals like Rakuten to earn cash back when I shop online for years, but it wasn't until recently that I learned I could potentially double my return by opting to receive my cash back in the form of American Express Membership Rewards points.
Rakuten is an online shopping portal that partners with over 3,500 online retailers, like Home Depot, Marriott and Nordstrom, and offers you cash back on a percentage of your purchase. Most retailers offer between 1% and 4%, but there are times when it gets as high as 10%-20% cash back on purchases.
After opening The Platinum Card® from American Express, I changed my Rakuten earning preference to Amex points (this option is also available for the American Express® Gold Card).
Because TPG values Amex points at 2 cents each, you can essentially double the value of the rewards you earn versus cash if you also value Amex points at that rate. Here's how we like to maximize Amex points in order to get at least that much value from them.
I will earn 3,000 Amex points after I complete an upcoming Vrbo stay that I booked using Rakuten. Those points are valued at $60 ... not bad for a stay I would have booked anyway.
