Banner year for hotels by Cameron Sperance, Senior Hotels Reporter Anyone who has stayed in a hotel over the last year and felt some sticker shock over the nightly rate won't be surprised to hear it was a banner year for the hotel industry. Marriott reported an eye-popping $3 billion profit for the entire year. Hilton notched a little more than $1 billion. While we're still waiting to hear the results for Hyatt, IHG and Accor, it's likely to be a strong showing for those hotel giants, too. What are the takeaways from these end-of-year financial reports? Hilton appears to be expanding its luxury grip by announcing a new partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World, a blow to SLH's current partner, Hyatt. Hilton and Marriott are also expanding into more affordable terrain, with Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano noting yet another new brand is in the works. Of course, don't feel like your hotel stays are just a drop in the bucket of billions these companies each make. Marriott's latest credit card offers include five free nights with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card (each night valued at up to 50,000 points) after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from your account opening.
