Here's how it saved me hundreds of dollars — and let me skip most of the ride lines — on a recent theme park trip. On a recent trip to Universal Orlando, I bypassed my usual budget-friendly hotels for a stay at one of the resort's top-tier Premier Hotels, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. Why? Because the benefits of paying a little more to stay there far outweighed the money I would have ultimately saved by staying at a less expensive property. Portofino Bay is the only Universal Orlando property available through the valuable Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts program, which is open to those with the Amex Platinum card and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. By booking my stay that way, I could use the card's annual $200 hotel credit (two-night minimum stay required) and receive free daily breakfast for two, an upgrade to a better room and a $100 on-property dining credit. But perhaps best of all, staying at a Universal Premier Hotel like Portofino Bay conveys the Universal Express skip-the-line pass for everyone registered to the room. Getting that perk included in the hotel stay saved me hundreds of dollars over buying it — not to mention the hours in line that it saved my family. The Amex FHR program makes luxury hotels feel more attainable while still providing considerable perks that can save you hundreds of dollars.
