| Save with Delta and United | by Tanner Saunders, Senior Hotels Reporter | | | Did you know that if you hold certain airline cobranded cards, you can get a discount when booking award flights?
My best friend, Clay, loves Delta Air Lines — and he loves reminding me that with his Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, he can book award flights for fewer miles than I can since I don't carry the card at the moment.
How? Delta's TakeOff 15 program, which launched last year, gives holders of certain cobranded cards a 15% discount on all award flights. Now, 15% might not sound like a lot, but with a hefty redemption, it can be significant. If you're booking a 100,000-mile award, saving 15,000 miles could be equivalent to a domestic flight (and, in my best friend's case, bragging rights).
Delta's cobranded cards have limited-time offers right now with elevated welcome bonuses that can help you earn miles quickly. The Delta SkyMiles Platinum card offers 90,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases on your new card in your first six months.
For United Airlines loyalists, you can also unlock savings if you are a cardholder with access to expanded economy-class saver awards. You also have the option to join the waitlist for business-class saver awards.
Right now, the United℠ Business Card is offering 100,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. This bonus is worth around $1,450 based on TPG's valuation of United miles at 1.45 cents each.
