| Cheap flights to spring hot spots | by Sean Cudahy, Aviation Reporter | | | It's not too late to score a great price — or award redemption — for a trip to a warm-weather destination this spring.
American Airlines last week released half a million seats for 5,000 AAdvantage miles each one-way. This sale includes flights to popular spring spots in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, and it runs through Friday.
We found 5,000-mile tickets to the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, Cancun, and even the new airport in Tulum, Mexico, which opens to U.S. airlines later this month ... among plenty of other destinations.
It's a reminder that while you can certainly get outsize value for your miles on long-haul business-class tickets, routinely using the right credit card when dining out and paying your bills — and perhaps even when paying rent — can help you score a flight to a great destination.
Hoping to earn miles instead of spend them?
There are also some surprisingly low fares to popular domestic destinations like Orlando and Las Vegas. Airlines have added so many flights to those cities (and a few others) that supply and demand have forced prices down, frustrating airlines but delighting customers looking for bargains.
If you plan to pay for a spring trip, it may be worth using the airfare purchase to quickly work toward the spending requirement for the welcome offer on a new credit card, which could help you earn tens of thousands of points for your next trip.
