PLUS: How to back up your digital life.
I'm mildly obsessed with backing up my digital files. Not because it’s fun—I'm obsessed because I've felt the pain of losing precious digital files, and I don't want to feel that sinking sense of dread ever again.
If you want to make sure you don't lose a byte, grab yourself an external hard drive. Better yet, buy two. I always back up my photo collection—which is currently about 4-terabytes worth of data—twice on local drives, once on a drive I mail to a friend, and once with an online backup service, just for good measure.
