New iPhones are here—but we found the smartest buy

PLUS: A stellar standing desk.

WIRED Gear Logo - Deals of the Week

Apple’s not the only tech brand debuting a gray-templed nerd in head-to-toe athleisure. I’m Cooper, the new director on WIRED Reviews (and a new voice in your inbox). I’ll be sending you my own picks each weekend—what I’m reading, what I’m shopping, and what the team and I are testing. My goal is to cut through the hype of each release and shopping holiday and deliver you smarter buys.

What I love about the WIRED Reviews team is that we don’t usually test in a lab—we test at home, in real life, with our pets and families. We pit robot vacuums against their natural nemeses, toddlers and dogs; our teenage gamer kids push the bandwidth limits of mesh routers; air purifiers get the Breaking Bad treatment with indoor tents and pollution kits; a former restaurant critic survives, somehow, on meal kits. I’ll take you behind the scenes.

Lastly, the desk and I would love to hear from you. Is your ear to the ground for living room speakers with both audiophile and designer bona fides? Is there a new dad who needs a babyproof watch that still feels giftworthy? (My budget G-Shock got a lot of wear when my son was born last year.) Let us be your concierge. Send us a note here.

SMARTER BUY: IT’S APPLE-PICKING SEASON

If you’re buying an iPhone, you might get struck with minor decision paralysis: Apple now sells seven different models, including this year’s Duo ($1,999) and 18 Pro ($1,199).

But our iPhone pick remains the near-perfect iPhone 17, which you can now find for $899 on Apple or $734–$759 (renewed) on Amazon.

Possibly the best way to save: Sell or trade in your old phone.

Apple will give you up to $700 off.

AT&T offers a max-$1,100 credit. So does T-Mobile.

Verizon’s credit is up to $1,000.

LIFE-TESTED, EXPERT-APPROVED

From our homes to yours: two curated picks.

The Easiest, Best Coffee

Look, I’m a new dad; I don’t have enough free hands to brew. Fortunately, Cometeer’s flash-frozen small-batch pods are a delicious pick-me-up.
